I have come across several cases of this type, where the Engineering Student has reached Final Year, sometimes even passed out, and still there is no Job offer in hand. It is this time when they become most active, and start looking for options, really any available option.
There have been cases where B.Tech students are working in these big cities at a meager salary of 6,000 to 8,000 per month. The funda is simple guys - "If you are not in strong position, people would take advantage of you". I remember I had once interviewed a candidate, where after 1 year of work she was getting 9,000 Rupees and work was like 13-14 hours daily.
Well, so that was the bad picture. Now, what could be done to avoid such a situation happening to you.
- First of all, take admission only in a college where placement record has been considerably good; atleast 70%. And to find this out, don't see college website or advertisement - that is all lie. Talk to current Final year students or pass out students from the college.
- If you have already taken the admission, then also check for the placement status of your seniors. This would give you an idea whether Campus Placements would be happening, or you need to go for Off-campus Placements.
- What if you have reached Final year, and still you do not see any chances of placement from the college. It's time to be on high alert. First of all, choose a platform which you are going to learn. It could be from one of the following - ASP.net, JSP, Advanced C++, PHP etc. These are some of the technologies using which you can develop some usable applications quite easily. Together with this you need to learn atleast one Database very properly, choose from - SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, DB2. After this you should, take up a project and try to do it in the best possible way. Take the help of some good teacher around you for guidance; else you can post here as well.
- Final year project should be done in such a way which polishes your skills of Programming and Database. This will give you some good stuff to write in your resume. Pick up a problem around you - it may be from your college, some shop or business around you, from some other institution or organization running around you. Talk to them and ask for problems in their operations; and try solving it using your Software Skills. To start with, it could be as simple as a proper Inventory System for a Superstore near your College.
- Keep your eyes open and try to attend any campus interviews happening around your place. Your final year project work will help you a lot, while talking in interviews there.
- In case your B.Tech got completed, and still there is no success in getting a job, then its high time for you to take the next step. Move immediately after college to any of the big cities which are IT hub like Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Noida, Gurgaon or Mumbai. Don't go back to your home and think that you will be able to prepare and get a job from there. Software Organisations are located in these big cities, and the only way to get into those is being near and attend the Interviews at regular basis.
- Many of the students do not get the confidence of going to these cities, because they do not have confidence on their knowledge. 3 things - Technical Skills (basics clear & One Programming Technology) , Communication Skills & Aptitude will make you successful surely at any place.
So, start planning and understand your current situation. Plan and start working. We will explain more about the resources for learning things.
